Firefighter Equipment
A Look at Some Important Firefighter Equipment
Firefighter equipment is essential for protecting the fire fighter and helping get the job at hand done. The equipment used should be designed for the needs of the job and the person doing the job. It needs to protect the firefighter and help him do his job safely and effectively. Here are a few essential items used by most firefighters today:
Fire Boots
Boots are important. When someone is rushing through a burning building or other difficult situation where protection and rescue is job one, being able to move quickly and easily is vital. Fire boots need to be strong, fire resistant, offer great fit, and a good grip. Fire boots are pretty distinct-looking and recognizable.
Helmets
Beyond his boots, a firefighter is often recognized by his hat or helmet, which generally indicates which fire department he’s with and which his rank is. Ranks in the United States, for instance, include: firefighter, captain, assistant chief, commissioner, chief, lieutenant, engineer, and battalion chief. The helmet is more than a symbol, though. It protects his head as well. The helmet generally consists of multiple layers and a chin strap. But under that helmet is an important item that has increased in popularity, the fire hood.
Fire Hoods
A fire hood is a piece of firefighter equipment, made of fabric, that’s worn under a standard fire hat. The hood covers the head, shoulders, throat, and chest leaving only the face exposed. This should be flame-resistant and help keep the head cool, enabling the firefighter to be more comfortable and focused on the job at hand. Fire hoods and other firefighter’s equipment should be very durable and high-quality options can last and be reusable even after exposure to highly hazardous circumstances.
Bunker Gear / Turnout Gear
The highly durable suit the firefighter wears consists of several layers to protect him from heat and moisture. It’s often referred to as bunker gear due to the fact that firefighters keep their equipment close by, even when they’re in their sleeping bunks.
Gloves
Hand protection is another vital aspect of firefighter equipment, allowing the fireman to do his job and protect his hands from heat and fire.
Other Firefighter Equipment
Firefighter equipment consists of a lot of items that also help them do their job, such as: pick axes, pike poles, flashlights, halligan bar, Breathing Apparatus, and a handheld radio to be in communication with others from their brigade.
